Cathy is a Michigan native who studied at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio earning a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Statistics and a Masters of Arts in Secondary Mathematics education. Upon graduation from graduate school she moved to Northern Virginia where she met her her husband Jay. They have one son Keiran, who is a blessing in their lives. Jay worked on Capitol Hill for 25 years, serving as Chief Administrative Officer for the House of Representatives from 1997 to 2007. Upon Jay's early retirement they relocated to Durango in 2007.
Professionally, Cathy "grew up" working at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology for 14 years and for 2 years at Hayfield Secondary School both Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia. She has taught students Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Advanced Placement AB Calculus and Advanced Placement BC Calculus, Advanced Placement Statistics, and Introduction to Computer Science Programming (JAVA, C++, Pascal). She has been involved in professional development making presentations to mathematics educators at local, state and national conferences.
Cathy is passionate about teaching quality mathematics and having students experience the power, elegance and beauty of mathematics. There is an artful joy of mathematics and all students should have the opportunity to play with and discover patterns, to make connections, to think critically, to solve problems and communicate mathematics clearly and effectively.
Cathy enjoys stained glass work, reading, biking and snowboarding and learning to play the piano.
Cathy began teaching at Animas High School in the fall of 2010 after teaching at Durango High School for three years. The positive and energetic faculty, administration and staff as well as, students' willingness to engage in learning on multiple levels and in deep and meaningful ways makes teaching at Animas a true joy. AHS has provided a professionally challenging environment in which educators continuously strive to hone their craft of teaching. Working with the students and witnessing their efforts to create beautiful work while making personal connections to content has been inspring and validates the meaningful work that teachers do.
